Healthy Tips by EdVenture's Dr. Kathie Williams (Health Education Programs Manager)
Nearly 50 million Americans, including millions of kids, have some kind of an allergy. It's estimated that allergies
are responsible for the loss of almost 2 million school days every year. Allergies are an immue system response that
is triggered by the exposure to an allergen - a substance such as pollen, mold or pet hair - that is harmless to
people without allergies. Allergy symtoms are similar but not identical, to the common cold.
When your child begins sniffling or sneezing, how can you tell if it is allergies or a cold?
- Does your child have itchy eyes or an itchy nose? These are common allergy symptons, along with sneezing and nasal congestion.
- A runny nose from an allergy will be clear, but runny noses from colds will often turn yellow or green after three to five days.
- Kids suffering from allergies will often notice a change in symptoms depending on the weather outside.
- If your child has a fever, then you are dealing with a cold. Allergy symptoms never include fevers.
- If your child is feeling achy or experiencing headaches then he or she most likely has a cold.
- If your child is experiencing chills, loss of appetite or exhaustion, he or she probably has a cold.
- If your child has a cold, other family members or contacts are often sick as well.
Remember, symptoms of both allergies and colds vary from child to child, so if you suspect a cold or the flu, call your doctor.
Allergies are not contagious, but the only sure way to know if your child has allergies is to test for them in your doctor's office.
